Album Review: Lead to Light

Running a marathon is tough, so don’t tie sandbags to your legs. Organic chemistry is tough, so don’t burn your textbook. Climbing Mt. Everest is tough and it only gets worse if you try to do it naked. Many, if not most, worthy endeavors are difficult to accomplish. Yet, it’s quite easy to make things harder on oneself. Take sophomore albums for example. Writing a follow up to a fantastic debut album is tough, so don’t alienate your fan base and restrain the best parts of your band. Not that I’m looking at anyone in particular…

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Summer 2014 Playlist

So Summer 2014’s been a little light on blockbuster tunes. There’s no “Call Me Maybe”, no “Get Lucky”, no “Somebody I Used to Know”. That doesn’t mean my car radio has been suffering though. Given this somewhat dry summer, it’s nice to indulge in a few forgotten tracks. Here are my top ten tunes that I’ve been listening to while driving around in this frigid 70 degree weather.

  1. The Pit by Silversun Pickups
  2. Team by Lorde
  3. It’s About Time by Young the Giant
  4. Summer Town by Third Eye Blind
  5. Treason! Animals by Franz Ferdinand
  6. Jackie Wants a Black Eye by Dr. Dog
  7. Witchy Night by Nico Vega (review coming soon!)
  8. Electioneering by Radiohead
  9. Go Right Ahead by The Hives
  10. Beverly Hills by Weezer

What’s on your Summer Playlist? Let me know in the comment section!

The world is littered with brilliant singers. That is not to diminish these singers’ ability or the beauty of their craft. However, the world is full of talented vocalists. What the world isn’t full of is fantastic bands. Too often you find a band with too weak of a singer (whether in ability or conviction) to elicit any kind of emotional response. On the other hand, there are far too many flimsy bands that are held together only by a talented vocalist. Nico Vega is one of those gorgeous exceptions. They are a raw, rapturous, and riveting, and they also just happen to have one of the finest female vocalists in rock music.
